Interview with David Swindle - Retired Detective Chief Inspector. The Puzzle of Peter Tobin Peter Tobin’s name was not the first to surface during the investigation. Detectives had sifted through a long list of possibilities, carefully weighing each against the evidence at hand. But eventually, one piece of information small at first glance shifted the entire focus of the inquiry. It was the final thread that convinced the team they were closing in on the right man. I wanted to understand how Tobin came onto their radar in the first place, and when exactly he stopped being just another name in the files and became the central figure of the case. The answer revealed the slow, deliberate narrowing of options: the process of considering, testing, and ruling out other potential suspects. One by one, those names were eliminated, until only Tobin remained. Confronting him in person was an altogether different matter. The former detective described what it was like to sit across from a man already suspected of unspeakable acts. There was no mistaking the weight of the crimes he carried with him into that room. I asked about their first impressions how he presented himself, what kind of profile began to take shape as they studied his words, his silences, and his demeanour.
Interview with Colin Sutton - Retired Detective Chief Inspector. First in the Frame: Levi Bellfield and the 129 Suspects From the outset, the key question was how Levi Bellfield moved from being just one name among 129 potential suspects to becoming the central focus of a high-profile investigation. What emerged was a picture of patient, methodical detective work: officers carefully considering, testing, and ruling out other suspects until only Bellfield remained. In fact, Bellfield was the first person investigated from the list of 129. Early intelligence pointed to a white van and a history of violence against women, quickly bringing him into focus. Yet the investigation that followed was far from straightforward. It was painstaking, driven as much by timing, intelligence work, and hours of CCTV analysis as by traditional forensic evidence. This careful blend of patience, precision, and persistence ultimately revealed the truth about Bellfield, exposing crimes that had remained hidden in plain sight for years. Encountering Bellfield in person was an experience. The former detective recalls that during the first introduction, Bellfield was immediately rude. But the team knew that letting emotions or outrage take over could compromise the case. “Even when you’re sitting across from a serial killer like Bellfield, you must stay composed and remember exactly why you’re there. Professionalism is everything.” When the verdict came back guilty, a deep sense of relief washed over the team. That relief soon turned into pride in what they had accomplished. Most importantly, the knowledge that Bellfield was no longer at large meant that countless women and girls were safer.
